Sometimes, a Child Just Needs a Little More Room to Bloom

Where little hearts find courage. Where confidence begins. Where they quietly unfold. The gift of being accepted.

This morning, on my way back from dropping the boys at the bus stop, something unexpected happened.

It lasted only a few seconds.

Yet it stayed with me long after the morning had moved on.

A little girl, about the same age as my boys, was walking downstairs with her school bag.

I looked up, smiled, and waved.

“Good morning!”

She looked at me, her face lit up, and with the brightest smile replied,

“Hi, Ritu!”

Not “Aunty.”

Not “Ma’am.”

Just…

“Hi, Ritu.”

It wasn’t her greeting that stayed with me.

It was the sparkle in her eyes.

The ease with which she spoke.

The quiet confidence in her smile.

Only a few weeks ago, she barely spoke.

She would stand quietly beside her mother or grandmother, listening far more than she spoke. Whenever they worried aloud about how quiet she was, I found myself gently changing the conversation—not because their concern wasn’t real, but because I wanted her to know, in the quietest possible way, that there was nothing wrong with who she was.

One day, her grandmother encouraged her to call me “Aunty” or “Ma’am.”

I smiled.

“No,” I said.

“We’re friends. You can call me Ritu.”

She looked at me for a moment…

and smiled.

It wasn’t about the name.

It was about letting her meet me without the weight of formality.

Children don’t always need us to build their confidence….Sometimes, they simply need to feel accepted exactly as they are. Perhaps that is where confidence begins.

Not in praise.

Not in achievement.

But in belonging.

As I walked home, I realised that what had made me smile wasn’t that she had greeted me…It was that, for those few seconds, a little girl who once chose silence had found her own voice.

And what a beautiful thing it is to witness a child quietly begin to bloom….If so, what a privilege it is to witness a child unfold—not because someone changed her, but because someone made just enough room for her to become herself.
